Embrace!

A space to form a community of women of color… in all our wonderful, complicated and sometimes frustrating diversity.

Embrace is an intimate gathering of students who are interested in exploring and challenging their understanding of themselves and other women of color, and who desire to find a language for oppositional experiences in their lives that stem from their gender and racial/ethnic identity(ies). Women who participate in this group are expected to be active participants, which entails consistently attending the weekly sessions and being engaged in shaping the learning and bonding experience.

Students will be provided with weekly readings (max. 10 pages) and have opportunities to facilitate conversations and contribute their own selections or personal pieces.

The goals of the group are:

  • to explore the myriad of layers of exploitation/oppression that are present in our lives and to give language to our experiences
  • to draw strength in our shared legacy of survival and struggle
  • to present feminist and womanist studies and literature as a language for exploring the experiences and relationships of women of color
  • to develop a space of mutual support and mentorship
This group is co-sponsored between the Multicultural Center and the Women’s Center.   For more information: vcw "@" duke.edu.
