Student Project Presentations from English 169CS:

"Beyond Black & White? Geographies of Race & Culture in the United States"


Featuring student-produced documentaries and skits on the place of "race" in multiple arenas of contemporary life - from policy to popular culture to personal experience. Snacks provided!
 

Projects & Presenters:

Each presentation will be 20 minutes long, with a 10-minute Q & A session to follow. The event will begin promptly @ 4pm.

1. Kids Say the Darndest Things: Rethinking Racial Representations

Randy Chen, Kevin Fang, Margaret Froneberger, Mike Harris

A documentary project on racialized perception based on interviews with local middle & high school students @ the West End Community Center

2. Taking the Stand: Voices on Affirmative Action

Albert Kim, Jennifer Lee, Brandon Levin, Uri Nazryan, Marianne Twu

A mock trial featuring diverse voices on the issue of affirmative action

3. Race in Advertising

Michael Chang, Jeff Dahlberg, Adrienne Everett, Brandon Peck

A documentary project examining the history and power of racial imagery in advertising

4. Extreme Makeover: Special Trans-Cultural, National, and Ethnic Edition!

JeLlana Canton, Samuel Lee, Keith Nimene, Florence Noel

A skit (loosely based on “Extreme Makeover”) that questions how identities are constructed, performed, and transformed
