FUNDING

What is This Resource?
This resource is a directory of funding opportunities for student leaders and groups. Although not an exhaustive list, the most commonly used resources are provided. Contact us to let us know of an unlisted resource that you would like to share.

Why is This Resource Important?
This resource is important because it offers student leaders and groups a centralized location to find information on a wide variety of commonly used funding opportunities on campus. A frequent complaint of student leaders is that it is difficult to know all of the funding opportunities available to them. This resource is an effort to help address this need.

The University & Cultural Fund

The University & Cultural Fund is intended for undergraduate programming that enhances the experience of Duke students. Click here for more information.

The Leadership Development Training & Conference Travel Fund

The University is committed to supporting students who desire to enhance their leadership skills through participation at local, regional, state and/or national conferences. The Student Leadership Development Training and Conference Travel Fund is available to undergraduate students who are seeking financial support to participate in leadership conferences and activities (e.g., conferences, workshops, training) related to their current role in the Duke community and benefiting their overall Duke experience.

Some conference travel in which past recipients have been funded include:
• American Mock Trial National Championship Tournament
• Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education Conference
• Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Student Leadership Conference
• InterCollegiate Taiwanese American Student Association Conference
• The LeaderShape Institute
• National Conference for College Women Student Leaders
• NC College Republican Convention
• Pan-American Collegiate Chess Championship
• Society of Women Engineers Regional Conference
• Workers Rights Consortium Board Meeting

A reimbursement up to $150 is typically awarded on a one-time per academic year basis. Note that this fund is for individual requests and is not designed for group submissions. Also note that this fund is not available for mission trips or academic-related travel (i.e. for a class project or individual research interests).

You can apply by submitting an on-line application at least 3 weeks prior to the activity for which funding is requested. On the application, you will be asked to provide general information about yourself, details regarding conference travel as well as the financial needs for the conference.

Every effort will be made to review your application and notify you of the decision in a timely manner (typically within 2 business days). Please allow 3-4 weeks for the check reimbursement process to be completed.

Kenan Institute for Ethics Campus Grants

Grants of up to $500 are available to all members of the Duke community (students, staff, and faculty) to support initiatives at Duke that promote ethical or moral reflection, deliberation, and dialogue. We welcome diverse perspectives and submissions from organizations and individuals in all areas of the University and the Medical Center.

The Campus Grants program provides support for speakers, workshops, meetings, curriculum development, publications, organizational collaborations, and other activities.

Travel grants are awarded only in exceptional circumstances where the project is clearly linked to promoting moral or ethical reflection on campus.

Organizations already receiving ongoing and sustaining support from the Kenan Institute for Ethics are not eligible to apply for these grants. An organization (or representative thereof) or individual may receive only one grant in any given academic year.
