Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Multicultural Center open to everyone on campus?
Yes!  The Multicultural Center welcomes all members of the Duke community--students, staff, faculty--to take advantage of our programs and resources.   As part of our mission, the Center is dedicated to enhancing diversity education for the entire undergraduate population.

What's the difference between the Multicultural Center and the Mary Lou Williams Center?
The Multicultural Center and the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture have distinct missions and answer to different needs within the Duke community.

As its full name suggest, the Mary Lou Williams Center is the hub of African American culture on Duke campus. Its mission is to serve as the "meeting ground for the African and African American student communities as well as a gathering place for all at Duke interested in increasing their awareness and understanding of Black people and Black culture."

Here at the Multicultural Center, our work is driven by two inter-related objectives: 1) to enhance the educational and co-curricular experiences of students of color at Duke (including African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino/as, and Native Americans), and (2) to promote diversity education for the campus at large.

While our missions are distinct from each other, the Multicultural Center and the Mary Lou Williams Center are both dedicated to realizing the University's overall commitment to diversity and equity. In this respect, our Center's work also intersects with the work of a number of other offices within the Division of Student Affairs, such as the Women's Center, the LGBT Center, the International House, etc.

Can I study at the Multicultural Center?
Yes again!  Students are welcome to use the MCC's lounge and resource room as a study area--as long as the space isn't being used for meetings and programs.  Most meetings and programs at the Center are scheduled for the evening hours, so your best bet is to drop by on weekdays.  Please feel free to check with the Center staff for space availability.

Does the MCC offer funding for student organizations and student programs?
The Center is responsible for adminstering the University Fund and Cultural Fund, both of which are earmarked for student programming initiatives. You can learn more about these funding programs here--or contact our Program Coordinator, Vivian Wang.
