Julian Sanchez is from Santa Barbara, California, where members of his family have resided for many generations. He attended UC-Santa Barbara during the 1960's, and later worked there as a Counseling Psychologist in the Counseling Center and as a Senior Student Affairs Officer in the Center for Chicano Studies. Julian left UCSB in 1980 to embark on a new adventure in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he and his family established their solar home building business, Solar 2001. After three years of building a number of great passive solar homes, including his own, he decided to return to higher education and took a position at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he served as the Director of Minority Affairs for ten years prior to coming to Duke. Since arriving at Duke in 1993, Julian has served as the Director of the Office of Intercultural Affairs and the Director of the Duke Center for Multicultural Affairs. His favorite pastimes are fishing in the local streams and lakes and running in the Duke forest. Running has always been a passion of his. While in Arkansas he held all of the masters road racing records from the 5k through the marathon.
